One of the most important roles within a scrum environment, the Product Owner ensures the ultimate functionality for a wide range of processes and innovations. This is a highly technical role, and it’s one that generates a great deal of demand from recruitment teams. Product development strategies are all too often likely to begin with the Product Owner. 

There’s a strong need for this hugely important individual to use their years of experience, their business acumen and their far-seeing perspective to define original goals and to provide the framework for their successful attainment. Product Owners tend to take on a great deal of communication requirements with various stakeholders, including customers, business management representatives and members of the development team. 

Key responsibilities for the Product Owner 

This is an extremely demanding position, and it’s one that requires the perfect mix of lone individual and committed team player. Among the many duties of the Product Owner are:

• Offering a visionary approach to the team 
• Managing the product backlog so that all scrum members are kept occupied 
• Providing a clear definition of the various product roadmaps 
• Analysing the market in order to clearly understanding strategies and targets 
• Understanding and adopting new project management methodologies that can improve team performance 
• Tailoring the needs of the client to the capabilities of the team 
• Always remaining focused on the ultimate goals of the various stakeholders 
• Providing the primary communication point between team and client 
• Evaluating and communicating product progress at each stage of the process 

As befits such an important role, the various duties of a Product Owner can change regularly throughout the lifecycle of any given product. 

What type of person would be perfect for Product Owner jobs? 

A number of personal qualities can combine to turn a good Product Owner into a great one. They include excellent communication skills, high quality problem solving abilities and strong adherence to the overall product vision. Product Owners are adept at storytelling, an ability that enables them to pass on their passion to the other members of the scrum. 

It often falls to the Product Owner to negotiate with various stakeholders, not to mention other members of the team, so the ability to get their message across is crucial. There are times when Product Owners need to be firm and other occasions when they need to be flexible. At all times, however, they will be seen as accountable for the success or failure of the initiatives. 

For those who have experience and a proven track record, there is going to be a number of tempting Product Owner opportunities on the job market. Professional accreditations can also make a candidate more attractive to recruiters, including PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP), Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO I) and Certified ScrumMaster (CSM). It should also be pointed out, however, that experience in delivering products is equally important.
