Business Analyst jobs

The role of a Business Analyst has become increasingly important in recent years, especially in corporations that are operating on a global basis. Business Analysts provide a crucial link between the ideas that are generated and the capabilities that already exist. They use a variety of IT-based applications to identify, analyse and create changes that benefit the organisation. 

Given the rapid rate at which corporations need to adapt to the changes in the market, it’s no wonder skilled and experienced Business Analysts remain in great demand. The ability to determine requirements quickly and efficiently are highly valued on the job market, so those who can show a proven track record will get numerous job offers.   

Business Analyst skills 

Successful Business Analysts require a number of skills and personal qualities that combine to make them stand out in this particular role. A thorough understanding of IT applications and processes is important, of course, and for senior roles there is likely to be a need to display measurable successes in previous postings. A good understanding of the relevant business sector is  vital. 

It’s important to show the ability to be a high-quality facilitator who is comfortable working within a specific remit, often too stringent budgetary requirements and within strict timeframes. A methodical approach to both problems and opportunities is  required, as is  the need to be accurate, detail-focused and conscious of the demands of all relevant stakeholders. 

In some cases, the Business Analyst  work within a team, while in others this could be a stand-alone role. Communications skills play a pivotal part in their overall success, both when liaising with colleagues and passing on detailed technological information to senior management. 

Business Analyst qualifications 

Many Business Analyst vacancies require an undergraduate degree or similar in subjects such as computer science and business information, although that’s not always the case.  

Formal qualifications help with applications for the more senior positions, but in many instances the recruiter is  looking for professionals  who have the required personal traits allied to successful experience within a similar field. There are also accredited qualifications that can be beneficial for the role of a business analyst: 

• BCS, The Charted Institute of IT 
• APMG, which includes a specialist Agile Business Management certification 
• PMI, Project Management Institute 
• IIBA, The international Institute of Business Analysis 

Specialists in this job are adept at using several techniques, such as  data visualisation, forecasting and data modelling. Leveraging software and to a lesser extent programming is important in the role through tools such as: 

• Excel 
• Access or other databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL 
• Google Analytics or similar 
• Tableau or PowerBI for visualisation 

An understanding of what they are capable of helps with applications. A willingness to continually learn and improve is alsoadvantageous. 

A growing number of people around the globe are working remotely from home nowadays, and there are  many Business Analyst jobs that contain an element of this.
