Job Description

As the (International) Category Manager you are responsible for developing the category within company and delivering the strategy by working in close collaboration with the International Marketing Managers, the regional category teams and the Operating companies. This role will provide insights and thought leadership that support the category strategy and brand development. The Category Manager reports to the Category Development & Strategy Director. He works closely with the Brand Teams to incorporate and enhance brand strategies, with CMI/Finance to build category insights and with Trade Marketing for category management tools. You will also work with local markets to implement local category strategies.

Responsibilities include:

Strategic and Insight Generation

  • Build up expertise at Group level - to be then shared with OCs - on the category dynamics (drivers and barriers on the category, consumer needs, trends, packaging norms, key success factors related to the category etc.) and translate external input (market data, consumer insights from consumer researches) into concrete recommendations including relevant product development roadmap directions
  • Manage data partner contract deliverables (panel analyses) including recommendations on how to use contracted studies, item selection, timeline management and implications/next steps
  • Translate rich business insights into actionable strategies for the category
  • Develop a good understanding of local specificities in using consumer researches and valid consumer insights which will be a subsequently help to strengthen our consumer knowledge and identify universal insights



Category Positioning and Architecture

  • Provide specific recommendations to further strengthen the global category positioning and maintaining consistency with the global brand strategies
  • Build a dynamic community
  • Develop annual plans, portfolio strategy and resources allocation
  • Strongly support International Marketing Managers in defining the NPD pipeline and work with them on the final NPD roadmap for each brand
  • Develop a Group category vision in line with Blue Print and in support of OC commercial milestones (Country Planning, Budget/Growth Platforms, ). Understand the SWOT and the gaps in our portfolio, the unexploited occasion opportunities with the underlying needs (OSP) for the category



Development and Innovation

  • Responsible for consumer relevant new product and packaging development based on consumer insights, teaming up with Group CMI and local CMI Teams through Local Marketing Teams
  • Provide experienced guidance to the OC's and IMM when it comes to developing, prioritizing and executing NPDs
  • Keep track of market evolution, competitors performances and best performing products to draw relevant conclusions for the business and adapt the strategy accordingly. Identify trends and developments that allow the formulation of business building strategies



Project Management

  • Coordinate and lead projects for one or multiple countries within one region
  • Provide ultimately a strategic guidance with clear recommendations to succeed in the category



Stakeholder Management

  • Maintain a strong working relationship/network with local marketing teams to leverage unique (local) category strategies
  • Serve as a liaison with cross-functional teams in preparing reports and drawing insights from consumer and category data; works cross functionally and collaboratively with Sales, Brand Marketing, and Finance
  • Work closely with the Brand Teams to incorporate and enhance brand strategies, CMI/Finance to build category insights & Trade Marketing for category management tools
  • Collaborate with key customers around key trend/innovation insights and future new product introduction
  • Perform as local expert and train the relevant stakeholders

The Successful Applicant

  • A Bachelors 'degree with Business or Marketing specialization
  • Experience in Marketing of at least 5 years within an FMCG environment
  • Proven track record in Category building fundamentals and go-to-market executions
  • Strong overall business acumen with ability to understand product PL and levers that influence profitability from the manufacturing and commercialization processes
  • New product development experience at Group and Market level with close interaction with R&D with significant expertise about category
  • research (qualitative and quantitative methodologies).
  • Ability to analyse and interpret market data (syndicated as well as consumer research) to translate consumer insights into concrete business results and provide guidance to local markets
  • Ability to shape strategic thought and guide the Commercial team in the superior execution consistently
  • Ability to initiate and lead projects, work independently and manage and influence cross functional teams
  • Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial, fast moving environment that encourages responsible risk taking
  • Proven track record in project management, strong capacity to coordinate projects across multiple countries and cultures
  • Strong analytical and creative skills with a focus on consumers and shoppers
  • Sensitivity to intercultural differences within a global group present in all Continents
  • Excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills
  • Flexibility and willing to travel frequently or if circumstances so dictate
  • Partnering and participating in project teams, either leading project teams or being project team member
  • Strong interest for international career opportunities/mobility
  • Able to contribute independently and/or through others
